The engineering school of communication of Tunis (Sup’Com), which is the leading engineering school dedicated to ICT in Tunisia, and located in the main Tunisian technopark, involves a very active research group in the fields of optical fibre communications, optoelectronics, quantum communications, and photonics components for telecommunication-based applications.
In 2009, a group of PhD, MSc and Engineering students, leaded by R. Cherif under the supervision of M. Zghal, established the first Optical Society of America OSA student chapter in Tunisia and the second in Africa. We are part of a worldwide network of over 185 chapters supported by the OSA:

In 2010, they started the Tunisia student chapter of the international society for optical engineering (SPIE):

O&PTSC participation is a great way to build technical and leadership skills while networking with peers and the greater OSA and SPIE community. OSA and SPIE provide each chapter with a wide range of benefits and opportunities for professional development:
- Free access to OSA and SPIE journals
- Free optics & photonics news (OPN) subscription
- Free Physics Today subscription
- Activity Grants (conferences, seminars,…)
- Free Outreach Materials
- Leadership Conference
- Traveling Lecturer Program
- Excellence Award
- E-Newsletter |

The objectives of our activities sponsored by either OSA and/or SPIE are to:
- Diffuse the knowledge of optics, pure and applied,
- Promote and advance research in the field of optics and photonics through educational and outreach activities,
- Connect our members with leaders from scientific institutions and companies employing physicists and engineers to establish opportunities for scientific collaboration, potential employment after graduation,
- Gain insight in neighbouring research fields of optics and photonics,
- Achieve social and scientific networking with other OSA and SPIE Student Chapters in Africa and all over the world.
